Scribal[img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img691d4b93debe13.85483162.jpg[/img] *Orléans* is a bag building worker placement game where we will be traveling the French country side, recruiting followers to add to our bag, while working to develop our supremacy in trade, construction, and science. The player with the most points wins. [green][tip] We recommend you complete this 53 step tutorial on a large screened device.[/green]1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment000

Scribal*Orléans* is played in 18 rounds and each round has 7 phases, as listed below. Phase 1 - *Hourglass* Phase 2 - *Census* Phase 3 - *Followers* Phase 4 - *Planning* Phase 5 - *Actions* Phase 6 - *Event* Phase 7 - *Start Player* passes to the next player in turn order We will cover each phase as we progress through the tutorial and they become relevant.4orl-hourglass-9-front000
ScribalIn the first phase, the event for the round is revealed. In the first round of the game, *Pilgrimage* is always the active event. *Pilgrimage* doesn't affect us in the first round, so we'll look at it more closely later. It is the only event that does not resolve in Phase 6. [green][tip] There are 6 types of events, and each repeats 3 times. We'll look at them as they come up.[/green]5orl-hourglass-9-front000
ScribalScroll down so you can see the full player board and click continue.6orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter000
ScribalThe player board is divided into 4 sections. Across the top we have the [green]*travel*[/green] and [blue]*construction*[/blue] actions. The action spaces in the second area are the [red]*Scriptorium* and *Town Hall*[/red]. We do not have the required followers to use those 5 actions. [green][tip] The Town Hall can be activated by any follower, except our starting followers.[/green]7orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer000orl-player-board-location-80606858-ship 8 orl-player-board-location-80606858-wagon 8 orl-player-board-location-80606858-guildhall 7 orl-player-board-location-80606858-scriptorium 6 orl-player-board-location-80606858-town-hall 6
ScribalThe [blue]*5 highlighted action spaces*[/blue] will let us recruit more followers. [green][tip] The numbers above each action space tell us how many of each follower are available to be recruited.[/green] At the bottom of our player board is the [red]*market[/red]* which holds our 4 starting followers. From left to right, we have the *farmer*, *trader*, *boatman*, and *craftsman*.8orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter000orl-player-board-location-80606858-castle 7 orl-player-board-location-80606858-monastery 7 orl-player-board-location-80606858-farm-house 7 orl-player-board-location-80606858-village 7 orl-player-board-location-80606858-university 7 orl-player-board-location-80606858-market 6
Scribal*Phase 4: the Planning Phase* --- Each action space requires 2 or 3 followers to activate it. Let's look at the [blue]*Village*[/blue]. When we assign a *farmer*, *boatman*, and *craftsman* there, we can recruit a *boatman*, *craftsman*, or *trader*. I think we should start by sending the required followers to the *Village*. [green][tip] Phases 1-3 don't trigger in round 1.[/green]9orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer000
ScribalThe tutorial won't let you move the followers from the market, so I will to do that, but first let's decide where to send the trader.10orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter000
ScribalThere are 4 options for our *trader*. We could send the trader to *Wagon* or *Monastery*, but those require a *knight* or *scholar*, and both require a *trader* to recruit. The only feasible options are to send the *trader* to the *Castle* or the *University* to prepare for the next round. I think we should send the *trader* to the [blue]*Castle* [/blue]to prepare us to recruit a *knight*.11orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer000
Scribal*Phase 5: the Action Phase* --- Click on the [blue]*Village*[/blue] to activate it. [green][tip] You can click the location on your player board or the button at the top of the screen.[/green] Step 11/531orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725c81508d5e10orl-actions-activate-location-village 7 orl-player-board-location-80606858-village 7
ScribalClick the middle button at the top of the page in order to recruit a *craftsman*.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-craftsman-counter6725c8187980410orl-action-choice-craftsman 16
ScribalA new *craftsman* and the followers we sent to the *Village* were placed in our bag, and we advanced one space on the [blue]*craftsman track*[/blue]. Each time we advance on this track, we receive a *technology tile* which is placed on the board and acts as a permanent follower. The *first technology* tile can only replace a *farmer*.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725c81da65e300orl-track-craftsman-citizens 7
ScribalOur opponent has just recruited a *farmer* and advanced on the [blue]*farmer track*[/blue] collecting a [red]*wheat tile*[/red]. For each space a player advances, they will collect a good. [green][tip] The top highlighted wheat shows how many are left in the game. The bottom one shows how many are in our opponent's inventory.[/green]1orl-player-good-stock-96564609-grain6725c83d689b300orl-track-farmer-markers 7 orl-main-reserve-grain 6 orl-player-good-stock-96564609-grain 6
ScribalWhen a player gains a *technology tile*, those are placed after all standard actions have been used. Anytime you place a *technology tile*, the eligible spaces will be highlighted by the blue dashed circle. There are several rules restricting placement and you can read those by clicking [blue]this button[/blue].1orl-action-choice-help6725c8489cf3800orl-action-choice-help 7
ScribalWhere should we place our first technology tile? Let's place this tile in the [blue]*Castle*[/blue] with our *trader* to make it easier to recruit the knight next round. Click the *farmer* in the [blue]*Castle*[/blue].2orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer6725c8489cf3810orl-player-board-location-80606858-castle 7
ScribalClick Confirm to end phase 5.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725c85d094f410phase5ActionsConfirm 16
Scribal*Phase 1: the Hourglass* --- Here a new event, *Income*, has been revealed. Each player will get 3 coins for every development level they have reached. Increasing development will be explained in a future round. [green][tip] During each subsequent Income event, we will get fewer coins per development level.[/green]1orl-hourglass-1-front6725c8649890000
Scribal*Phase 2: the Census* --- The *Census* compared our positions on the [blue]*farmer track*[/blue]. Our opponent recruited a farmer last round putting them ahead of us, so they received 1 coin. In the two player game, there's no penalty for being the lowest person on the [blue]*farmer track*[/blue].3orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725c8649b17000orl-track-farmer-markers 7
ScribalWith more players the lowest person loses a coin. If multiple players are tied for the highest position or the lowest position, there is no reward or penalty. For example, in a 3 player game, 2 people may be tied for the highest spot, so neither of them will receive a coin, but the person in the lowest position will still lose a coin.4orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer6725c8649b17000
Scribal*Phase 3: Followers* --- Here we draw followers from our bag. At the beginning of the game, we can only draw 4 followers and we will see how to increase that this round. When playing *Orléans*, you may want to draw 1 follower at a time to examine about your options, but for now, just click *Draw 4 and End Phase*. Step 21/535orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725c8649d2ad10orl-followers-drawing-remaining 16
ScribalIn this round, we will be looking at the *Castle*, *Town Hall*, and another use of the *Village*. [green][tip] Followers can be left in the market during planning, but it may cause issues in Phase 2 as you are able to draw more followers.[/green]1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725c8b241e3800
ScribalOur opponent visited the *Village*, recruiting a *boatman* and advanced on the [blue]*boatman track*[/blue], receiving 2 coins. Each *boatman* gives more coins. The 5th *boatman* does not give coins, but a *citizen*. The *citizen* is important for end game scoring and we'll revisit that near the end of this tutorial.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-boatman6725c8d2827ec00orl-track-boatman-citizens 7
ScribalClick on the [blue]*Castle*[/blue] to recruit a knight.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer6725c8ee90b7b10orl-actions-activate-location-castle 7 orl-player-board-location-80606858-castle 7
ScribalWe've a recruited *knight* and have moved up the [blue]*knight track*[/blue]. Advancing on the *knight track* increases the number of followers we draw from our bag. The numbers above the track indicates how many followers we draw each round. If we are the first player to recruit a 4th knight, we get a *citizen*. If we recruit a 5th *knight*, we'll be able to draw 8 followers each round.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-knight-counter6725c8f5cb3b600orl-track-knight-citizens 7
ScribalAdditionally, in future rounds, we'll have access to the top 3 actions on our board.2orl-player-track-stock-80606858-knight-counter6725c8f5cb3b600
ScribalAny followers can be used at the [blue]*Town Hall*[/blue] and it is the only location that doesn't need every spot filled to use it. Each follower you send to the [blue]*Town Hall*[/blue] will provide an immediate bonus and are permanently removed from your bag. Click on the [blue]*Town Hall*[/blue] to send our craftsman to the *Beneficial Deeds* board.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer6725c9093848110orl-actions-activate-location-town-hall 7 orl-player-board-location-80606858-town-hall 7
ScribalThere are 8 jobs on the *Beneficial Deeds* board. 3 of those jobs require *craftsmen*. The top deed, [green]Building of the City Wall[/green] provides a coin for every follower we place there. The bottom deed, [red]Canalisation[/red], gives you an option of a coin or a *development point* for every follower. The middle deed, [blue]Building of the Cathedral[/blue], gives you 2 coins per follower.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725c9110360500orl-additional-board-location-canalisation-slots 6 orl-additional-board-location-building-of-the-cathedral-slots 7 orl-additional-board-location-building-of-the-city-wall-slots 8
ScribalLet's send our *craftsman* to [blue]*Building of the Cathedral*[/blue]. Click on the left *craftsman* of the two, as pictured below, to get 2 coins. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785edf941bff9.22182216.jpg[/img] [red][tip] The player that places the last follower at a deed will collect a *citizen*.[/red]2orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725c9110360510orl-additional-board-location-building-of-the-cathedral-slots 7
Scribal*Phase 6: Event* --- BGA just resolved the round's event. Each player started with 1 *development level*, so we each got 3 coins. We'll see how to increase our *development level* in a future round. Step 30/531orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725c91a4729d00
ScribalThis is the first *Trading Day* event. We'll get 3 coins for every trading post that we've built. Like *Income*, each subsequent *Trading Day* event gives fewer coins per trading post. [green][tip] While development has a maximum of 6 levels, it is possible to build 10 trading posts before the end of the game.[/green]2orl-hourglass-6-front6725c91a4c81300
ScribalWe're going to activate the *University* this round to get a *Scholar*, but we'll look at the *Scholar* in closer detail in a later round because the *scholar track* is tied to the *development track* and there are not rewards for every movement on the *development track*.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725cc6594fb400
ScribalNeither of us got any coins from the *Trading Day* event. The new event is *Taxes* where we will need to pay 1 coin for every good we have collected.Taxes will get cheaper each time the event comes up.1orl-hourglass-5-front6725cca503c7100
ScribalOur opponent was just built a *Trading Post*. It's time that we built one as well. Click on the [blue]*Guildhall*[/blue].1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725d18be158110orl-player-board-location-80606858-guildhall 7
ScribalIf the *Map* didn't stay up, click [blue]*Map*[/blue] at the top of the screen. You can see we started in *Orléans* and each player has built a *trading post*. A *trading post* counts toward end game scoring and will earn you coins during the *Trading Day* events. [green][tip] Each player can have a *trading post* in *Orléans*. Only one player can have a *trading post* in any other city.[/green]1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer6725d1a2e4b6c00orl-main-map-tab 7
ScribalClick on the *Monastery* so we can recruit the last type of follower, the *monk*.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725d1aaac08c10orl-player-board-location-80606858-monastery 7
ScribalWe've collected our first *monk*. The *monk* acts as a wild follower and can replace any other type of follower on your personal board, but can only be used as a monk on the *Beneficial Deeds* board. [green][tip] The monk is the only follower that does not have a track to advance on.[/green] [red][tip] During each of the Pilgrimage events, you can not recruit a monk.[/red]1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725d1ae8487d00
ScribalWe have not collected any goods, so we didn't have to pay any taxes. Our opponent had 1 good, so they paid 1 coin.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725d1b4a252700
ScribalIt's time for a *Harvest*. During phase 6, we have to pay food or 5 coins for any food we don't have. We don't have any food right now, so we need to get some this round. [green][tip] This *Harvest* requires 1 food. During each following *Harvest* you will need more food, either *wheat*, *cheese*, or *wine*.[/green]2orl-hourglass-8-front6725d1b4a8f1e00
ScribalClick [blue]Wagon[/blue] to travel.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725d23e8168210orl-actions-activate-location-wagon 7 orl-player-board-location-80606858-wagon 7
Scribal4 roads connect to Orleans, along with 2 rivers. At the start of the game, every road will have 1 good on it in a two player game. In higher games, some of the roads will have an extra goods tile. Wheat is the least valuable food in the game, and there is some on the road to *Châteadun*. Travel to *Châteadun* by either clicking on the city on the map or the button at the top of the screen.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725d2456b5d710orl-action-choice-CHAT 16

ScribalClick [green]*Tracks*[/green] at the top of the screen. Our opponent has activated the *Village* to recruit a *trader*. When a player recruits a trader and advances on the [blue]*trader track*[/blue] they can construct a building. After advancing the first time, the player has access to the *Level I* buildings. After the second advance, they'll have access to either *Level I* or *Level II*.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-trader-counter6725d2bf6099100orl-main-tracks-tab 8 orl-track-trader-citizens 7
ScribalIf you would like to look at the building tiles, click [green]*Place Tiles*[/green]. If this box covers any of the buildings, it is safe to minimize it. ScribalIn the last round, each player paid a *wheat* in order to satisfy the *Harvest*. In this round, we have the final event type, a *Plague*. One of followers will be drawn from the bag and placed back in the supply. We can not lose our starting followers. If a follower is drawn from the bag and removed, we don't lose progress on any track it may have been associated with.1orl-hourglass-18-front6725d2ed7f72100
ScribalThe tutorial is almost over. Click on [blue]*University*[/blue] to recruit our second *scholar* and learn about advancing our *development level*.1orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725d493b0a3c10orl-player-board-location-80606858-university 7
ScribalClick on the *Tracks* tab. We advanced on two tracks this time. The *scholar* we recruited caused us to advance on the [blue]*Scholar Track*[/blue] which gave us 3 development points. That allowed us to advance on the [green]*development track*[/green].1orl-track-development-citizens6725d4988a1fd00orl-track-scholar-citizens 7 orl-track-development-citizens 8
ScribalWhen we recruited our first *scholar*, we advanced 2 spots on the *development track* for a total of 5 spaces. After we passed the 3rd space, we collected our first *citizen* and passing the 4th space, we gained a *development level*. In addition to recruiting *scholars*, there are several locations that will provide us development points, such as the [blue]*Scriptorium*[/blue].2orl-track-development-citizens6725d4988a1fd00orl-track-development-citizens 8 orl-player-board-location-80606858-scriptorium 7
ScribalYou should have all of the information you need to play Orléans, but before we finish the tutorial, there are a couple of additional items I need to cover: *Torture* and end game scoring.3orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer6725d4988a1fd00
ScribalAnytime you need to pay coins and cannot, you will be subjected to *torture*. When you are being tortured, you must replace every missing coin with an item from this list: -*Trading Station* (already built or from your supply) -*Follower* (drawn randomly from your bag) -*Development Point* -*Goods tile* -*Place tile* -*Technology tile* Anything lost here is removed from the game.4orl-player-track-stock-80606858-farmer-counter6725d4988a1fd00
ScribalDuring end game scoring, you receive: - 1 point per coin - points per goods tile as listed on the player aid - your citizens will be added to the number of trading posts that you have built and the total will be multiplied by your development level. If the game were to end right now, we would get 4 points from our citizens/trading posts/development level.5orl-player-icon-stock-development-status-806068586725d4988a1fd00
ScribalThe [blue]score sheet[/blue] is updated as the game goes on and what would normally be end game scoring is updated as you play.6orl-scoresheet-button6725d4988a1fd00orl-scoresheet-button 7
