ClutronWelcome to the game tutorial of *Yin-Yang*. This is an abstract strategy game where you will be moving and applying your own custom laws in order to win. Let's get to the table and show you how that's done.1overlay-0-1001
ClutronThe first thing to know is how to win. There are 2 ways to win: *1)* Move one of your own pieces into your opponent's home square. In our case we are *black*, so getting one of our black pieces into this space up here would win us the game. *2)* Maneuver your pieces in such a way that your opponent is unable to move, and unable to apply any of their laws to the board.2square-0-3000square-0-3 1
ClutronI have mentioned *laws* a couple times now, what are those? *Laws* are actions you apply to a set of 4 squares on the board with a specific arrangement of tokens as shown on the left side of the law. When applied the law will do one of three things, add tokens (settlement), subtract tokens (disappearance), or allow you to change your other laws (adaptation).4player-private-hand63150274bc99300
ClutronLet's go over our initial laws. This first one here, if we have an arrangement of two black and two white tokens like on the left, it would allow us to change one of our other laws when we apply this one. This is an adaptation law.5domino-463150274bc99300
ClutronThis second law, if there is an arrangement of 4 white tokens on the board, we can apply this law to remove the top right token. This is a disappearance law.6domino-363150274bc99300
ClutronThe third one here is a settlement law, when we have two black tokens and two empty spaces like shown on the left, we can apply this law to fill those empty spaces with more black tokens.7domino-263150274bc99300
ClutronAnd finally we have one more settlement law which when applied to a space with two white pieces like below, would fill the two empty spaces with black tokens.8domino-163150274bc99300
ClutronOne thing to note about settlement laws, you are limited with how many new pieces you can create on the board throughout the game. For white it's 10 pieces, for black it's 8. The number will go down as you add pieces, but never back up if you lose pieces. A reminder will be on the player HUD in any new games you create. [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecc439f790.98059363.jpg[/img]9overlay-0-163150274bc99301
ClutronAnd with that explanation we get to the first part of the deeper strategy of this game, and it's that *YOU* get to decide what your laws are and what they do. While the system will spit out a set of four laws for you, you can change and adapt them however you like. A good rule of thumb to start the game is to have at least one of each type of law, with the fourth being whatever you like.10overlay-1-163150274bc99301
ClutronFeel free to play around with the laws below to see what you can do, but there are a few rules: --You can only remove one piece with a disappearance law --You must add two pieces with a settlement law --Pieces can't be rearranged, only added or subtracted You will know if an arrangement is invalid because the boxes will turn [red]red[/red]. *Click continue when you are done.*11player-private-hand63150274bc99300
ClutronNow that our initial laws are set, let's play the game. For our first turn we can't move any pieces so we have to apply a law (hopefully you can apply one on turn one). Click the *Apply Law* button.1buttonApplyLaw63150291d729e10
ClutronNow we decide which law we will apply. Any laws that can't be played are greyed out, so let's pick from the remaining two. We just started the game so adapting a law isn't needed, so let's disappear a white piece. *Click on our second law* When selected you will see grey dots appear on the board, this is the center of the four squares where you can apply it. *Apply it there*1player-private-hand6315029e64f3d10overlay-0-1 16
ClutronNow that a law has been applied our turn will end. In a normal game you could wait for the timer to run down, but for this tutorial please click continue.1buttonConfirm631502a28ab9600
ClutronOur opponent didn't move any pieces, but did apply a law. You can see the law he applied on the right side of the board. His is a disappearance law for when there are two white and two black pieces as shown on the right side of the tile. This information is important because you want to avoid being in that arrangement so they can't apply their laws. But there is also another reason.1domino-8631557a016fbb00
ClutronThe other reason for knowing what the applied laws are is that *no two laws can have the same starting arrangement*. This means with my played law, no other laws can start with an arrangement of four white dots unless I change that law. That's another part of the strategy of this game because you can limit your opponents options with the laws you play.2overlay-1-1631557a016fbb01dominos-player 1
ClutronNow back to our turn, and we have more options. On a turn you can do *one of three things*: --Move a piece --Apply a law --Move a piece and then apply a law (you can never apply a law and then move a piece) For this turn, lets *move and apply a law*. Click on the [blue]Move button[/blue].3buttonApplyLaw631557a016fbb10
ClutronNow we get to move one of our tokens. The tokens we can move are highlighted on the board, and when chosen the options for movement will be highlighted. In this game you can only move orthogonally (up, down, left, right), no diagonals. Let's move our black piece up one.1domino-86317549282df411square-2-1 18 square-3-1 17
ClutronAfter moving you can *apply a law*, [blue]pass[/blue], or [red]restart the turn[/red]. Let's *apply a law*. Pick the one law we have available to use and apply it to the below square.1buttonCancel631754a30fa7110overlay-2-2 2
ClutronSo now we get to change a law to better suit our strategy. Let's change the left law in the highlighted box until it looks like this: [img]https://x.boardgamearena.net/data/tutorials/img6785ecc4172be6.45588749.jpg[/img] Now we have another disappearance law. Click *confirm* at the top of the screen when you are finished.1player-private-hand631754a8c037e10player-private-hand 2
ClutronOur turn again, let's do another move and apply a law. *Click on move*1buttonMove63175a2b6cef110
ClutronMove our piece up. (Yes, I know we are playing into their hands, but we are learning the game!)1domino-86317714fe126a11square-2-2 18 square-3-2 17
ClutronNow let's apply our brand new law!1domino-2631771524e74610overlay-1-0 2
ClutronNotice *Apply Law* isn't an option because we don't have any laws that fit the state of the board. We have to be careful, because if we weren't able to move either, we would have lost! Also there is a *Propose Draw* button. This is for if you get deadlocked and neither of you can make progress, then you can propose a draw, and if the opponent accepts, the game ends.1buttonMove6317c2c51af7f00
ClutronAnd that's all the rules of the game! While the rules aren't complex, the strategy can get very deep, and getting to know your opponent becomes important as well because if you can predict their moves, you can stop them!2overlay-1-16317c2c51af7f01
ClutronI hope you enjoyed the tutorial, please leave a rating and if you have any questions you can consult the Yin-Yang game page on BGA for more rules and videos. Have fun gaming!3overlay-1-16317c2c51af7f01
