ozcygtWelcome to Race for the Galaxy! In this game, you will be racing to build the most successful space empire via exploration, development, settlement, conquest and economy! Your goal in this game is to score the most victory points, or VPs.1goals

ozcygtRace for the Galaxy is played over a series of *rounds*. At the start of each round, all players choose a phase simultaneously, and then play through the phases that were chosen. You then check if endgame conditions were met- if not, it's time to start a new round. There are five phases (see top left of screen) - we will explain them later.2goals

ozcygtThe game ends at the end of a *round* when the *VP chips* run out, or when a player's tableau grows to *12 (or more) cards*. There are *24* victory point chips at the start of a 2-player game, 36 for 3 players, and so on. 3vp_remain

ozcygtLet's talk about the different locations in the game. First, you have a *hand*, from where you play your cards... 4hand_panel

ozcygt ...and then, you have a *tableau*, which is where your played cards go. Your hand is secret, but your tableau is public. 5tableau_panel_84916982

ozcygtHere, you can see, in order, your victory points (stars), the number of cards in your hand (hand icon), your VP chips (blue hexagon), your military ([red]+1[/red]), and the number of cards in your tableau (card back icon). 8player_board_84916982

ozcygtNotice that VP *chips* are a different thing from victory *points*! VP chips are in finite supply (24 at the start for a 2 player game). The game ends at the end of the round when these chips run out.9player_board_84916982

ozcygtLet's look at the cards themselves in a bit more detail.10goals

ozcygtLook at the top left corner of each card to figure out what kind of card it is. This card is a *world*, because it has a big circle on the top left corner.11player_hand_item_216

ozcygtIn contrast, this card is a *development.* Developments are denoted by a *diamond* on the top left corner of the card.12player_hand_item_140

ozcygtEvery card has a *cost* in cards (the big number in the circle or diamond), and gives a certain number of *victory points* when played (the small number in the hexagon next to the big shape). Export Duties, for example, costs 1 card to play and gives you 1 victory point.13player_hand_item_140

ozcygtWorlds with a [red]red circle[/red] on the upper left (like both worlds in our hand) are called *military worlds*, and they work slightly differently. We will get to them later. They still give you as many points as the number in the hexagon, though.14player_hand_item_216

ozcygtIt's now time to actually start playing! We start by *choosing a phase*. Everyone chooses and reveals a phase simultaneously at the start of each round- then we play through the chosen phases, in order. The order is Explore, Develop, Settle, Consume, Produce.15goals

ozcygtA few nuances: - In a 2-player game, both players choose 2 phases each, instead of one. - Players can choose the same phase(s). - Everyone plays the chosen phases, but you get a bonus during the phase you picked. (We'll go into detail on those bonuses later.)16goals

ozcygtLet's say we choose *Explore +1 +1* and *Develop*, and let's get started. (To do this, you click the blue buttons under the phase names, at the top left.)17goals

ozcygtAha! We and our opponent both chose 2 phases each, so we will play through 4 different phases (all except *Consume*) this round.1goals

ozcygtThe top bar tells you the current phase and what you must do. We see that we are in the *Explore* phase, so let's learn how it works!2archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ozcygtWhen someone chooses Explore, *everyone* draws *two* cards and keeps *one*. We drew 3 cards and can keep 2, because we chose the "+1 +1" bonus of the Explore phase (which you can see in the boxes above). The +1 +1 stands for "+1 choice" and "+1 card (to keep)".3explore_set

ozcygtLet's choose New Economy and [red]Rebel[/red] Warrior Race. 4explore_set

ozcygtWe are now in the second phase of the round, the *Develop* phase. In this phase, everyone can play one Development card, but it is not mandatory.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ozcygtRecall that developments are the cards with a *diamond* at the top left. We have three: Export Duties, New Military Tactics, and New Economy. Let's play Export Duties.2player_hand_item_140

ozcygtAs you may recall, Export Duties has a cost of *1*. But what does that mean? A cost of 1 means *you must discard one card from your hand* (not including Export Duties) to play this card.3player_hand_item_140

ozcygtOh, what happened? We played Export Duties... and discarded nothing! What's going on?1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

ozcygtDo you remember how you picked *Develop* while choosing phases at the start of this round? That gave you the bonus for the Develop phase. The bonus for the Develop phase is *a discount of 1 card* for the card you play this phase. Since Export Duties costs only 1 card, with the discount we pay nothing.2develop_phase

ozcygtAlright, now it is time for the *Settle* phase! In this phase, you can play a world, but you don't have to. Non-Military worlds like Alpha Centauri (in our opponent's tableau) are played in the same way as developments- by discarding other cards from your hand. 3goals

ozcygtHowever, we only have [red]Military worlds[/red] in our hand! How do we play *those*? You do not discard cards from your hand for military worlds. Instead, if you have enough *military strength* (big number on the card outlined in red), you simply place one for free. For example, Former Penal Colony requires 2 Military to place. You acquire military strength by playing certain cards to your tableau.4player_hand_item_200

ozcygtDo you see the circle saying "+2" in red on the middle of this card? That means this card gives us 2 military strength. This is an example of a *phase power*. On every card, you can see the icons I/II/III/$/IV/V in a column. These icons correspond to the Explore, Develop, Settle phases and so on, respectively ($ denotes the Trade phase). On each card, there are more symbols next to at least one of these icons. 5card_169

ozcygtA *phase power* is a bonus, a resource, a discount or an ability that a card gives you during a particular phase. Every power is shown next to its phase icon. New Sparta gives us +2 Military during the Settle phase (the third phase) but does nothing else in any other phase. Phase powers are only activated once a card is in your tableau. They do nothing when a card is still in your hand.6card_169

ozcygtExport Duties has a phase power as well. It has some icons next to the *$* icon, which means it activates during the *Trade* phase. We will talk about *Trade* and *Consume* later.7card_140

ozcygtFor now, since we are in the third phase (Settle), we are only concerned with our +2 Military bonus. 2 Military is sufficient to settle Former Penal Colony, and it gives us another +1 Military! That sounds like a good deal. Let's conquer it.8player_hand_item_200

ozcygtOh, what's this? A blue rectangle appeared out of nowhere on the card we just played! These small rectangles are called *goods*. There are four types: novelty goods (blue), rare elements (brown), gene materials (green) and alien technology (yellow). Notice how there is also a good on Alpha Centauri!1card_200

ozcygtThe good appeared when we placed this world because Former Penal Colony is a *windfall world*. Windfall worlds have *a halo with a certain color* on their upper left, around the big circle. This world has a blue halo, so it produces a blue (novelty) good when played.2card_200

ozcygtOur opponent's starting world is Alpha Centauri, also a windfall world. Starting windfall worlds have a good on them at the start of the game. This one has a brown halo, though, so it produces a brown good. Notice that a windfall world can either be military or non-military!3card_167

ozcygtOur opponent played [red]Rebel[/red] Miners, which is a different kind of world. We know it is a *military world*, because the big circle icon (upper left of the card) is in red instead of black. But what does the solid brown color mean? That means that this world is a *production world.* Production worlds do not get a good on them when you place them.4card_202

ozcygtAlright, now we are in the Produce phase! Do you notice what changed?5goals

ozcygt[red]Rebel[/red] Miners got a good! There can only be one good on a world at a time, but there was none on this *production world*. During the *Produce* phase, every *production world without a good* gets a good on it. 6tableau_panel_91915659

ozcygtCongratulations, you just finished your first round of Race for the Galaxy! We just finished going through all of the phases we chose last time, so now we choose phases again. In a two-player game, we can choose to settle twice or develop twice in a round. This is the only way a phase can occur more than once in a single round.7goals

ozcygtLet's see this in action. Click the "Choose" button under *Settle* twice to do a Double Settle. 8goals

ozcygtOur opponent chose to *Explore* and *Trade*! So far, so good. Let's explore.1goals

ozcygtSince we did not pick Explore this time, and since we have no Explore phase powers in our tableau, we do the default Explore action: We draw 2 cards and keep 1.2explore_set

ozcygtWe are building up a nice military, so let's take [red]Rebel[/red] Base. 3explore_set_item_227

ozcygtWe now have 3 Military (2 from New Sparta and 1 from Former Penal Colony), so let's use that to play [red]Rebel[/red] Warrior Race, which needs 3 Military. We were the one who selected *Settle*, so we will see the Settle phase's bonus in a bit.1goals

ozcygtTa-da! We successfully placed a new world. 1card_211

ozcygtWe just got a new card into our hand! This is the *Settle* phase's bonus- you draw a card after you play a world. If you didn't choose Settle, you just play a world and that's it.2player_hand_item_177

ozcygtThe card we just played ([red]Rebel[/red] Warrior Race) gave us our fourth Military, so in our second Settle phase, we can conquer Malevolent Life Forms, which has a military strength of 4. Let's do so.3player_hand_item_216

ozcygtWe are now in the *Trade* phase, because your opponent chose the *Trade* phase bonus (denoted by *$*). In the Trade phase, someone discards a good and draws a certain number of cards. For blue/brown/green/yellow goods, you draw 2/3/4/5 cards respectively. If someone decides to Trade, a Consume phase always occurs afterwards. We will talk about Consume phases later.2phase_selected_4

ozcygtOur opponent sold the good that was on the [red]Rebel[/red] Miners world, and drew 3 cards. Since we did not pick Trade, we cannot sell a good ourselves.1card_202

ozcygtEasy does it! That's another round done. We skipped the rest of the *Consume* phase because no player had a Consume phase (IV) power on any of their cards.2goals

ozcygtFor the third round, let's try to play our [red]Rebel[/red] Base card. It's another military world, with a strength of 6. But we only have 4 Military, so how can we place it?3goals

ozcygtThe answer is New Military Tactics. In the third phase (Settle), we can discard this card from our tableau and temporarily gain +3 Military. Of course, we need to develop it first. 4player_hand_item_142

ozcygtThat's a plan! Develop New Military Tactics first, then use it to conquer [red]Rebel[/red] Base. Notice how the phases always occur in a particular order. That's what gives them their numbers on the top left of the screen. Let's Develop and Settle.5goals

ozcygtSince we picked Develop, we get the Develop phase bonus. The bonus is a discount of 1 card. Since New Military Tactics costs only 1 card, we get to place it for free. 1player_hand_item_142

ozcygtNow we can discard New Military Tactics to settle [red]Rebel[/red] Base! To do this, click New Military Tactics first, then [red]Rebel[/red] Base.1card_142

ozcygtDon't forget our Settle bonus: We get to draw a card after settling (or conquering) a world!1player_hand_item_193

ozcygtOur opponent sold a card from Alpha Centauri by picking *Trade* again, but since there is still no Consume power on any tableau, we skip the rest of this phase. 1goals

ozcygtWe are now in this round's Produce phase, which was picked by our opponent. Everyone's production worlds (ours included!) got replenished with a good. However, *windfall worlds do not normally receive a good during the Produce phase.*2goals

ozcygtAlpha Centauri, a windfall world, produced a good because of the *Produce phase bonus* of our opponent: If you pick Produce, you get to place a good on *one* of your windfall worlds.3card_167

ozcygtHmmm... It's time for a new round, and we do not have any obviously good cards left. Let's try to *Trade* away our good on Malevolent Life Forms for 4 cards and see if we get anything interesting. We might as well settle Gem World while we are at it- its *phase power* gives us a card every time we produce a good on it, and that can come in handy!4card_216

ozcygtWe've decided to *Settle* and *Trade*. Click "Choose" under *Settle* and *$* under *Consume*.5goals

ozcygtThe +5 +0 Explore bonus means "look at 5 more cards, but do not keep any extra cards". It is useful when you need a specific kind of card.1phase_selected_1

ozcygtLet's choose New Survivalists, since it has a Consume (phase IV) power. It will let us convert 1 blue good into 1 card during the Consume phase. (Note how we drew 3 cards instead of 2- can you figure out which card improved our Explore action?)2explore_set_item_190

ozcygtWhat a coincidence! We drew another Export Duties card. Some cards have multiple copies in the deck. However, you can only ever play one at a time, so this duplicate Export Duties is useless to us.1player_hand_item_141

ozcygtIt's time for us to Trade, this time. Notice that our opponent also chose to Trade this round, so we will both get to trade. 2goals

ozcygtWhoa! We just drew a LOT of cards! Notice how we drew 5 cards instead of 4, thanks to the *Trade phase power* of Export Duties. You can hover your cursor over a card to see a detailed explanation of its properties and phase powers.1card_140

ozcygtFinally, it's time for our very first proper *Consume* phase! In this phase, you use your Consume (phase IV) phase powers to convert goods into cards (in your hand) or *VP chips*. Our opponent's New Earth, for example, turns 1 good of any color into 1 VP chip and a card. Its bonuses are either doing a *Trade* phase beforehand (as we saw earlier), or *scoring double VP chips* from consuming goods. 2pagemaintitletext

ozcygtConsuming is *mandatory*, so long as you have the power(s) and good(s) to do so. We have a blue good on Former Penal Colony, and we have a way to consume 1 blue good on New Survivalists, so we have to use them. To do so, click Former Penal Colony's good, then click New Survivalists.3card_190

ozcygtThat concludes our Consume phase (and thus the round)... but what's this? Oopsie! *You have to discard down to a maximum of 10 cards in your hand at the end of a round*, but we have 11 cards. We have to get rid of one. Let's get rid of Destroyed World.1pagemaintitletext

ozcygtDo you notice something weird about two of the cards in your hand?1goals

ozcygtNew Economy and New Galactic Order, like *all 6-cost Developments*, do not give you a set amount of victory points! Instead, they score depending on certain criteria. There is also only *one copy* of each 6-cost development in the deck.2player_hand_item_162

ozcygtNew Galactic Order, for example, gives us 1 VP for every Military strength we have at the end of the game! We are already at 4 Military (you can count from your tableau or check the upper right corner of the window), and we have three worlds in our hand that will give us even more military, so this is a great card for us! 3player_hand_item_162

ozcygtInterstellar Bank seems like a great card, so let's also develop this one this round. Since we will develop New Galactic Order as well, we should develop twice.4player_hand_item_148

ozcygtClick "Choose" under *Develop* twice to Double Develop. 5goals

ozcygtOur opponent also chose Develop once, but that does *not* mean there will be three Develops! In this situation, two Develop phases will occur, but while you get the discount bonus for both of them, your opponent will only get a discount for the *first* one.1phase_selected_2

ozcygtNote also how our opponent chose to use the "double VP chips" bonus of the *Consume* phase!2phase_selected_4

ozcygtWe fulfilled our plans and placed Interstellar Bank and New Galactic Order, but our opponent wasn't twiddling their thumbs, either! They put down a very powerful development called Mining Guild. With their x2 Consume bonus, they will score *six* VPs this phase! They also get extra points for putting down Mining worlds. *gulp.*1card_135

ozcygtOur opponent is now in a position to score MANY points VERY quickly! Remember, this is a race, so let's try to reach 12 cards in our tableau and finish the game quickly!1goals

ozcygtWe place our two Alien worlds, as we planned. The order does not matter here, since we already have enough Military for both.1goals

ozcygtWhew... That was a quick round, could you follow it all? After we settled our two worlds, our opponent produced and gave us some goods to use. Unfortunately, we have no way of using all those goods! 1goals

ozcygtWe have a couple worlds that will net us a few points, so it's a good time to settle them and finish the game. Remember, the game ends when someone reaches 12 or more cards in their tableau!2player_hand_item_223
