Epilogue
New York, the day of the crime.
– Damn, if that idiot Hutchson passes his censorship laws, the business is over, I’ll have to turn in the key.
– But what would happen to me? Asked Gloria, one of the girls.
– Don’t worry honey, it’s not a done deal yet. There’s a thousand ways to change a man’s mind.
– Hutchson Jr. looks less stuck-up than his father, in any case!
– How so?
– I’m sure I saw his son, Junior, yesterday. I recognized his pretty face.
– Where?
– In Brooklyn, across from Danny Rocca’s love nest. I saw him in his viewfinder. Hutchson Jr was kissing a beautiful black woman. Torrid.
– Rocca, the voyeur photograph cop? Things going well with him?
– Yeah, easy-peasy. It’s only posing naked for him. Maybe I could be a model?
– And you think Danny Rocca took pictures of Jr with that woman?
– Well, his camera was on a mount in front of the window when I got there.
– And knowing his love of candid photography... Well shit, then, I’ve just got hell of a plan! Gloria, can you bring a bottle of good booze to Danny and make him drink?
– Yeah, sure, he loves whisky, why?
– Then, could you open the window next to the fire escape for me before you leave?
– If you want, Scars, but Danny knows you, he’s got a loaded weapon, and he’ll never agree to hand you his pictures. And I don’t know where they’re stashed. He showed them to me once when I was over there, that’s all. He’s obsessed, a collector.
– Don’t worry yourself about it. Does he have enemies?
– I dunno. That mobster he arrested, there, he keeps his picture on the wall. He’s always annoying me about that. Rocky Fresco or Frasco, I think.
– And his wife’s not aware of anything?
– Yeah, maybe, but she doesn’t care. He bought her a hairdressing salon in Manhattan.
– I’ll go see her. And swing by the pharmacy.
– What are you planning, Scars?
– That’s not your problem. Just do as I say. I’m going out. We’ll do this tonight.
New York, the night of the crime.
– Where are those damned pictures? Was wondering Scars, who was getting agitated as he searched the apartment. Can’t be behind the sofa where he passed out? Clink! The picture he just pulled off the wall slipped from his hands and the frame struck the ground where it broke.
– Mmmh, what’re you doing there? The sound had just woken up Danny Rocca. Knocked unconscious by the drugs, he was struggling to stand up, his eyes vacant and trying to focus. Panicking, Scars pulled out his gun and shot. Unmissable at that distance.
– Aw, shit... but it was the perfect plan! Of course he had to recognize me... Alright, let’s see. The pictures are really there. I’ll get rid of the gun outside. And Rocky’s picture gives me an idea. Yeah, a tag... Ah-ha! Rocky, my man, sorry, but you’re not about to stop seeing cops everywhere! I don’t want to get fingered for this.
