turtler7Welcome to Beyond the Sun! You will manage one of the major Earth factions as humanity expands outwards into the universe. You will make choices about developing new technologies, expanding your influence in the universe, and managing your economic civilization as best you can.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

turtler7Each turn starts by moving your action pawn to a new action hex space (including in the same action if there is one free) and doing what that action says. 2bts-tech-0-0

turtler7Beyond the Sun is often called "tech tree the game". Unsurprisingly the most frequent first turn action is the first basic "Research a level 1 technology" by using a population on it. Click this top action row and then select to research Advanced Robotics.3archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

turtler7After finishing an action, you will select one of 3 productions. Population Growth turns 1 available crate into a population cube for each column that doesn't have a food production disc underneath it. Ore production creates 1 ore for each revealed ore icon (these icons appear under each column of cubes as well). Or in a rare bind, you can trade any number of times.1bts-playerBoard84373820

turtler7You can see what resources your civilization currently has available in the player status bar. Produce 1 Population cube from Column A by using the top interface bar to continue.2bts-button7

turtler7One of the best parts of Beyond the Sun is being the first to research a higher technology. You must have all prerequisite arrows already marked with your player cube and take an action that allows the research. Your reward for meeting these requirements is resolving an event and if the research space has multiple prerequisite cards you get to choose which color type to research.1bts-action-0-0-1

turtler7Research the 4th down level 2 technology by selecting the second option in the Basic Spacefaring action box and then this technology slot. The technology must be blue as it only has one incoming arrow color from Advanced Robotics.2bts-event2-3

turtler7The event will immediately process if it offers no choice to the active player and be posted in the game log. Some events offer end game scoring or special actions during the game. This event gave you 1 ore immediately as a bonus for being the first to research there and gives all players a new option during their turns.1bts-event28

turtler7Each time you research an undiscovered technology spot, you will draw 2 cards with an incoming arrow of the correct color. Then you get to pick one to make available for others to research and you to benefit from now. The first card gives you an automate food disc (improving your player board production and granting points along your top track). The other lets you jump on the exploration board.2bts-techCard6

turtler7Research is always a good way to gain access to more efficient or powerful actions. Both of these cards allow research options and are great cards. For now, let's go for first access to the higher level technologies. Pick Psionics Research technology card to continue.3bts-techCard6

turtler7Produce 1 ore to end the turn and continue. Note that it was possible for you to use Black Market Industries to put out another ore production disc and make 2 ore instead. Since it will sacrifice victory points it is sometimes worthwhile and sometimes not. For now, just make 1 ore.1bts-button20

turtler7Time to take advantage of our Psionics Research action and the 5th down level 3 technology only requiring a single level 1 prerequisite. Select the action space on the Psionics Research 4th down level 2 technology card and then the 5th down level 3 technology slot and hit research at the top bar to continue!1bts-event3-4

turtler7In every game of Beyond the Sun, there are 4 events that always appear randomly in the level 2 and level 3 event cards. The other events will be far more varied from game to game. These standard events open up guild covers under the basic spacefaring box and make new actions available to all players. Choose the Tier 2 Technocrats Guild cover and confirm opening it in the interface bar.1bts-eventTop

turtler7Wow! Level 3 technologies are great! Getting access to these early can allow players to become much better at the part of the game they want to focus on. Choose Quantum Data Exchange to continue.1bts-techCard32

turtler7Ending your turn with 0 population cubes usually offers very few if any options for a future turn. Choose population growth for 1 more population cube.1player_board_84373820

turtler7Most guild actions provide a baseline cost for important game actions (Terraforming, researching level 3s, researching level 4s). But Technocrats' Guild is a little different. It offers two actions in one move by researching a level 1 technology and then picking any basic spacefaring action effect as well. Choose to use this action and research the bottom level 1, Advanced Genetics, to continue.1archivecontrol_editmode_centercomment

turtler7 One of the basic spacefaring actions allows you to use your action to turn your next crate into a population (even if your food production cannot produce a person during production) and gain 1 ore. This action space is often used when you left yourself not enough population cubes or when saving up for an expensive powerful turn next round. Use the bottom collect resources action to continue. 2bts-action-0-0-3

turtler7By now, we understand taking actions, production, and researching. It is time to start using the exploration board (in many games it is time to start using this board much earlier). Factions can get ship cubes here in many ways. When built a ship goes to Sol or to one of the marked shipyard systems that player controls. turtler7Since Lalande has both disc icons, you can put either type of production disc on it. Looking at the player resource menu, you are out of ore. And looking at your ore production discs, you only need to put out one more to open another symbol. Choose to place an ore production disc in the top bar to continue.1bts-button75

turtler7System cards are not just useful to control for production discs. They can also be colonized by returning their colonization cost in ship power back to crates on your board. Doing so gives the listed victory points at the bottom of the card as well as a colonization bonus. You must control the colony to be allowed to colonize and then take an action space with the colony symbol.1bts-systemCard1-11

turtler7Prepare to colonize by researching Wormhole Technology using Psionics Research. You will use the immediate benefits to get positioned correctly.2bts-techCard34

turtler7You will jump the 1-ship from lalande to the western shipyard to get another food production disc off your board. Then you will jump your new 2 ship from Sol to Teegarden's Star. There is a down arrow disc icon on this card. This means when you gain control of it and place your disc, you may take the listed control bonus. This will give you a population for free.1bts-node1

turtler7Colonize time! You could choose the colonization action on Terraforming if you owned the tech, the available Terraforming Guild action, or your android surveyors action. Android Surveyors is your cheapest option so choose that one. Then choose to colonize Teegarden's Star. Return your 3 ship to pay for it. And you will get another production disc, points, and a passive ongoing bonus.1bts-action-2-5-0

turtler7This should be all the major highlights to know for playing Beyond the Sun! There are many wonderful details to discover as you play. But how does the game End? Achievements! At the end of a turn, you must claim an achievement if you qualify. In a 2- or 3-player game, the game end will trigger with 3 total achievement discs. In a 4-player game, the game end trigger is 4 total discs.1bts-achievement1

turtler7The round the triggering achievement is claimed is finished to the final player. And then all players get 1 final turn.
