This is not a rule at all, each player only ever fires one shot per turn: www.hasbro.com/common/instruct/Battleship.PDF

Well, I totally agree with it. In my country the rules are: when you hit a ship or part of it, you must try again until you miss.
Maybe, as a suggestion, BGA could create this variation as an optional choose in the games's preferencees.
